The 2020 American Flat Track series came to an end this past weekend with a doubleheader on the “Bull Ring” sized short track. The smaller tracks aren’t typically Shayna’s speciality but the team was encouraged with her qualifying P-4 for Friday nights event. Shayna was able to get a good jump off the line in the semi qualifier but had the misfortune of downed riders in front of her forcing her off of the groove and found herself in a fight just to make her way back into a qualifying position for the main event.
The main event was a struggle from the back row. Shayna found herself in a “follow the leader” type of race with most of the field running very close lap times but no place to pass. Shayna finished 14th on Friday but showed good speed and was encouraged for racing on Saturday.
Day two at Daytona saw rain on and off throughout the day. Riders advanced to the main event based on qualifying times instead of racing in a semi. Shayna slipped into the main with her time from the qualifying session but would once again start on the back row. Shayna made several passes and worked her way to the lead pack but like on Friday found herself on a small groove that nobody was budging away from. Shayna finished in 13th position on Saturday night and 12th overall for the season….definitely not the result that she had trained all off season for.
The bright spot for the weekend and for the season for Shayna was watching her fiancé Briar Bauman defend his SuperTwins title and retain the number 1 plate for 2021. Shayna and Briar will be married this Sunday (October 25) and will enjoy a week or two to recharge from the season before getting back to work to sort out the reason for the less that stellar 2020 season.
